EYES OF THE WORLD

"This art serves as a visual reminder of the need for compassion, kindness and equality for everyone."

Activist Art is a term used to describe art that is grounded in the act of “doing” and addresses social issues among others. Along these lines, “Eyes of the World”, reminds us to celebrate our collective humanity, equality and compassion, for a better world for all.

“Eyes are extraordinary – they don’t reveal age, gender, education level, sexual orientation or cultural background. They are unique to each of us yet remain a common human characteristic that binds us together.” - Joanne Hunter

“Eyes of the World”, a mosaic mural, is a piece of collaborative activist art, conceived by Connecticut artists Joanne and Bruce Hunter.

The mural, both in size and scope, is an impressive example of the potential that resulted when over 4,000 families, friends and strangers of all ages and walks of life, came together in respectful unity, to work side-by-side, transcending language, race, creed, age, ability, gender and socio-economic differences, for a shared ideal and purpose.

Comprised of many unique eyes, visitors can envision themselves as a member of the world community, where we are all equal and deserving of compassion, kindness and human dignity. It also serves as an invitation – an invitation to perpetuate awareness of those rights for all.

The Hunters pare well known for their team building art projects that celebrate collaborative work and cooperation. Corporations, municipalities, schools, community groups and libraries are among the many organizations who have benefited from their projects.

“Eyes of the World” is just one of the Hunter’s exemplary group works. Projects such as these, foster the assembly of people to create something unexpectedly bigger than themselves. Like the “Eyes of the World”, most pieces become public art, which provides a legacy for not only the spirit of those involved in its creation, but also our communities and society to appreciate its beauty and joy.

To be kind, honest and have positive thoughts; to forgive those who harm us and treat everyone as a friend; to help those who are suffering and never to consider ourselves superior to anyone else: even if this advice seems rather simplistic, make the effort of seeing whether by following it you can find greater happiness. - Dalai Lama
